The Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 has finally been announced, with the clamshell laptop range now supporting Thunderbolt 4 and packing a 12th Generation Intel Core processor.
Once again, the laptop will be available in both a 13-inch and 15-inch size. Microsoft hasn’t altered the screen or design for the latest iteration, so it still sports a chunky bezel around the screen. Keep reading on for everything you need to know about the Microsoft Surface Laptop 5. 
Release date
The Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 will be available to buy in stores from 25th October 2022. Price The 13-inch version has a starting price of SG$1,588.00, while the cost of the 15-inch model will begin at SG$2,038.00. Specs The Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 will be powered by 12th Generation Intel Core processors. You’ll get to choose between an Intel Core i5-1235U and Intel Core i7-1255U CPU, although the 15-inch model is only available with the latter. There’s no option for a discrete GPU, so you’ll need to settle for the integrated Intel Iris Xe graphics instead. The Surface Laptop 5 will be available with up to 32GB of RAM and up to a 1TB SSD. The laptop will sport a 720p front-facing webcam with Windows Hello support. Microsoft has introduced Thunderbolt 4 support, with other ports including USB-A, Surface Connect and a headphone jack. Microsoft hasn’t altered the screen, with the 13.5-inch model sees a 2256 x 1504 resolution, while the 15-inch alternative has a 2496 x 1664 resolution. 
Design
The only new addition to the Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 design is the new Sage colour option. Otherwise, Microsoft has opted for the exact same design which will likely draw some criticism. While the Surface Laptop 5 already has a good design, with a portable 1.3kg weight for the 13-inch model, it is starting to look a little outdated compared to rivals. 
The bezel surrounding the screen looks noticeably thick compared to the MacBook Air and Dell XPS 13. Microsoft has been using the same design for a number of years now, so those hoping for a refresh will be disappointed.
