2. Kobo Clara 2E: Latest 6 inch display at 300PPI. ComfortLight PRO backlight. With 16GB. Cost around $215+.

3. Kobo Libra 2: Most popular Kobo, larger 7 inch display at 300PPI. Has better backlight with lesser blue light. It has 32gb of storage too, can store around 10,000 to 20,000 ebooks. Costs around $270+.

4. Kobo Sage: Largest and best Kobo with 8 inch display at 300PPI. Has more backlight with least blue light. Costs around $380+. Supports ebooks and stylus input.

Most Kobo eReader screens have a built-in light called ComfortLight or ComfortLight Pro. Use ComfortLight to brighten the screen. ComfortLight PRO is a feature that adjusts the screen’s blue and red light to make reading easier on your eyes. During the day, the screen displays a small amount of blue light to keep you alert.

As the day progresses, the light gradually changes to orange candlelight and contains less blue so that the blue light doesn’t affect your sleep. This is available on Kobo Clara 2E, Kobo Libra 2 and Kobo Sage. 

Some Kobo eReaders are waterproof like Kobo Clara 2E, Kobo Libra 2 and Kobo Sage, thus allowing you to read on the beach while bathing or anywhere without worrying that the Kobo reader will be damaged by water elements.

1) Kobo Nia, the basic Kindle rival with a higher resolution screen​

​Kobo's Nia is a basic Kindle rival with a higher resolution screen. It offers direct competition to the basic Amazon Kindle. Rakuten Kobo is a no-frills ereader that offers direct competition to the basic Amazon Kindle. It was launched in July 2020.

Kobo Nia is the basic Kindle rival with a higher resolution screen. The 6-inch screen has a pixel density of 212ppi (a step-up from the 167ppi Kindle display).

The other advantages the Nia offers over the Kindle are file format compatibility (like every other Kobos), third-party app integration, and OverDrive capabilities. Like the other Kobos, you'll be able to sideload ebooks to the Kobo Nia, or Amazon's own Bookerly font.

The Kindle is physically similar to the Kobo Nia, but Kobo Nia has a textured rear panel that makes it feel more secure in your hand. It does have one drawback--it doesn't have USB-C charging. The Kobo device does offer this attribute, which was disappointing for a 2020 launch.

The Nia is different from the Kindle in that it doesn’t contain Bluetooth support like all of the Kobo ereaders. Such a limitation is shared by all their devices, even the top-of-the line models like the Kobo Clara 2E, Kobo Libra 2 and Kobo Sage.

So, if you're not keen on getting locked into the Amazon ecosystem, then the Nia is an excellent ereader for anyone on a tight budget. However, the Nia doesn't have a blue light filter built-in so it's better suited to reading in daylight hours if you'd prefer having one over the many other features the Kobo Clara 2E has to offer.

3) Kobo Libra 2, premium reading experience for an affordable price​

While traditional ereading devices are the most affordable, these are still difficult to use with one hand. The Kindle Oasis established a new standard in mobile ebook reading with its asymmetrical design that’s now becoming more popular among the larger models. This is why Kobo Libra 2 is using the same asymmetrical design that is lightweight and ergonomic to hold. This is also the newer 2021 version, newer than the previous generation Libra H20.

However, unlike some of the other models on our list, the Libra offers better durability than its competition. It also has an improved user interface that offers a better reading experience than you'd get on Kindle models.
The Libra 2 is a much smaller workhorse of a reader with a 7-inch screen, compared to the bulky and heavy Oasis. It has the latest E Ink technology and reads as quickly as its elder sibling. It has all the functionalities required for a modern-day eReader.

A new ebook navigator allows for swiping to the top in order to access via either tapping right in the middle or at the bottom, you can also use the Libra with landscape mode if you want to read this way. We already found Kobo much easier than Amazon’s interface and these changes have combined it for an easy-to-use system that isn't convoluted like Amazon's is.

The Libra boasts a durable plastic body, features more distinguishable page-turn buttons, and the power button sits deep in the rear for easy access.

And while the Oasis' sleek metal design gives it a very premium look and feel – and carries a price to match its status – the Libra's affordability and usability make it easy to recommend – especially in countries where OverDrive support means you can borrow ebooks from your local public library. The Libra 2 is around $130 cheaper than the Amazon Oasis too!

4) Kobo Sage, 8 inch of pure reading galore

Kobo Sageis Kobo's answer to Amazon's Kindle Oasis is courtesy of an extra inch of display. Like it's competitors, the Forma is supposed to automatically adjust to more comfortable one-hand holding. Where the Sage one-ups Amazon – and perhaps attempts to justify its higher price than the Oasis – is by adding more pixels, with 8 inches on its 8-inch display.

Despite the size disparity, both premium ereaders have similar weights. The Oasis feels more durable because it has a metal exterior, but signs of deterioration are noticeable than the Forma. The Sage's rubbery and textured back causes no issues during reading while also prohibiting slippage on slick surfaces.

Sage offers the ability to switch between landscape and portrait mode with just a couple of seconds, but it's nowhere near as quickly as the Libra 2.

Kobo's newest device, the Forma is relatively affordable and easy to use with a touch screen and backlight that allows you to choose from a range of warm colors and turn it up and down when you're in bed. It will automatically adjust the warm lighting according to timing.

Unlike the Oasis, though, it has a single 8GB version and with that being the most expensive ereader from the popular Kobo brand. In all honesty, however, it makes itself popular by offering a superior user interface, OverDrive support with Kobo software integration, Dropbox integration with cloud-based readings, and Pocket integration in long-form web article reading.

How to use Overdrive together with your Kobo e-reader?

• Find local libraries that support OverDrive

To find the closest library that supports OverDrive, go to overdrive.com and enter the name of your city, then click Go. You'll see a map with libraries that support OverDrive.

• Set up your OverDrive on your eReader

To borrow eBooks with OverDrive, you'll need to sign in using your library card information, Facebook, or an existing OverDrive account.

Before you start, you'll need a valid library card from your local library and an active Wi Fi connection.

1. Go to your Home screen.
2. Tap the More icon at the bottom of the screen.
3. Tap Settings.
4. Tap OverDrive.
5. Tap Get started.
6. Tap Create account to create an OverDrive account, or tap Sign in to OverDrive to find your library and sign in with your library card, Facebook, or an existing OverDrive account.

​After you've signed in to your library, you can borrow books on your eReader.

1. Go to your Home screen.
2. Tap Discover icon at the bottom of the screen.
3. Search for the book that you'd like to borrow.
4. Tap on the book title or cover that you'd like to borrow.
5. Tap the More icon.
6. Tap Borrow with OverDrive.

If the book is available, you'll see a dialogue that confirms that you've checked out the book. Simply sync your eReader to see the book on your Home screen. If the book isn't available, you'll have the option to place the book on hold. You'll be notified by email when the book is available.

Items you've borrowed are automatically returned at the end of their lending period.
