1) Teach Cooking/Baking to your kids
Ever wish that your kids could prepare their own breakfast or lunch? This may be a good opportunity to explore that option. Here’s a guide to the skills they can learn by age.

For Ages 5 - 7 year olds
With the usage of sharp cutting tools like knives and scissors, always consider the ability of your child and if you're not comfortable, then consider a knife designed for young cooks or leave it for a while.
  • Using a small knife - children should learn how to form their hand into a claw to keep fingertips out of danger
  • Cutting with scissors – Use scissors to cut open plastic packaging or wrappers
  • Grating - fingers can easily be grated so remind them to watch their fingers
  • Measuring – This is a great opportunity for the kids to do basic maths with less supervision
  • Mixing of flour - rubbing in flour and butter with fingertips is necessary for most of recipes
  • Beating and folding - show children how to beat cake mixture with a wooden spoon or fold in egg whites without knocking out too much air

For Ages 8 - 11 year olds
Together with the skills set for 5 - 7 year olds, when children reach 8 +, they can start to undertake activities with less supervision. Supervision is still key due to safety hazards in the kitchen, but do take a hands-off approach.
  • Planning your family meal
  • Give them a simple recipe to cook by themselves
  • Finding and storing of ingredients in the cupboards and fridge
  • Using a peeler
  • Whisking, using a balloon whisk or handheld mixer
  • Using heat on a hob, oven and microwave
  • Teaching them to open canned food

2) Watch educational shows or documentaries with your kids

Spending time on television may not always be a bad thing for your kids. Spending time out of classroom watching educational shows or documentary may be a good learning opportunity for your kids. From the plight of captive killer whales to child hunger, documentaries give kids a glimpse into the real world they may not normally encounter in school. If you wish to sign up for video streaming services in Singapore, will be a good link for you to compare subscription prices. Here are a few documentaries that we will recommend to your kids.

Wings of Life, ages 6+
Expose your kids to the nature world and this movie will tap into their curiosity by celebrating the earth's unsung heroes. This film examines how the Earth's food chain depends on bees, hummingbirds, bats and other creatures.

Discussion topic: Discuss flowers and how your family can help pollinators in your own backyard or a community garden. What can you do to keep the cycle of pollination going strong?

Walking with Dinosaurs, ages 9+
Are your kids fascinated about dinosaurs? This documentary unfolds with digital technology that recreates the 155-million-year reign of the dinosaurs. This documentary follows the lives of dinosaurs from their beginning to their zenith to their eventual decline. Paleontological discoveries from fossil remains and preserved footprint groupings provide the framework.

Discussion topic: What assumptions did the filmmakers have to make to create this documentary? Do we really know what color dinosaurs were? Do you think this was exactly the way they walked? Do dinosaurs cared for their young?

3) Watch videos, cast musics and play games with the Google Home
Make use of Google Home devices as a command source for controlling your TV and as a cooking assistant. Using voice commands, you can instruct Google Home devices to look up recipes, and answer questions like, “How many tablespoons are in a cup?”

One interesting useful function is how Google Home Hub handles recipes. You can get visual step-by-step instructions on the Google Hub’s screen by simply asking for how to make certain dishes while the Google Home Mini and Google Home only read out the instructions verbally. If needed, you can use your voice to advance further into the recipe or even skip ahead to specific points if you’ve moved on. It will also set countdown timers for you when required, measurement calculations when you need to convert things alongside translations and to do lists. It’s the ultimate kitchen assistant.

Besides that, with the help of Google Chromecast connected-TVs, you can voice control your TV through Google Home devices to play music, movies and photos using Spotify, Netflix, Youtube and Google Photos. Here are some useful commands:
- Play movies on Netflix using Chromecast "OK, Google, play [show or movie title] on the [TV name]."
- Play videos on YouTube using Chromecast: "OK, Google, play [video] on the [Chromecast name]."
