AMD is gearing up to announce its next generation of desktop processors: the AMD Ryzen 7000 series.
The upcoming Ryzen range will be built upon the new Zen 4 architecture, with AMD suggesting the chips will offer a 15% uplift in single-thread performance compared to the preceding generation. AMD also already demoed a 16-core Ryzen 7000 processor that hit 5.5GHz. This is a first for the company, although still shy of the reported 6GHz max turbo frequency speed of the upcoming Intel Raptor Lake processors. We’ve rounded up all the facts and key details on the AMD Ryzen 7000 series of desktop processors. Keep reading on to find out everything you need to know.
Release date
AMD has announced that it will be holding a livestream event on 29th August 2022 to unveil the new AMD Ryzen processors using Zen 4 architecture. The live stream will be watchable on the AMD YouTube channel, while a replay will also be available to watch on the AMD website. The event will start at 7pm ET(7am SGT on 30 August 2022). Don’t expect the Ryzen 7000 processors to become available to buy straight after the reveal showcase. You’ll likely have to wait a few more weeks (or even months) before you can pick them up. Price AMD has been tight-lipped about the pricing of its next-generation processors. However, a Canadian retailer has seemingly leaked (spotted by @momomo_us) the prices of the upcoming processors, which you can check out below:
The leaked retail listings are for the chip on a tray, rather than in a box. This means they’re not bundled with a cooler, which will likely be even more expensive. Of course, there’s no way of knowing whether these leaked prices are accurate. AMD tends to keep the pricing close to its chest until the launch event. Either way, it shouldn’t be too long until we find out. Specs AMD has confirmed that Ryzen 7000 desktop processor will be based on the new 5nm Zen 4 architecture, rather than the 7nm node found on previous processors. A smaller node means more transistors, which should ensure a faster performance. AMD claims that Zen 4 will provide up to a 15% improvement to the single-threaded performance when compared to Zen 3. This could potentially go a long way to improving gaming performance. The AMD Ryzen 7000 range will top out at 16 cores and 32 threads, while a live stream by PCWorld showed an upcoming chip reaching up to 5.5GHz frequency speeds during a playthrough of Ghostwhire: Tokyo.
5.5GHz is the highest frequency speed we have seen from an AMD processor, suggesting the flagship chip will stand head and shoulders above its predecessor. However, it’s not quite fast enough to leapfrog Intel, with the upcoming Raptor Lake processors tipped to see a max frequency speed of 6GHz.
There will also be support for DDR5 RAM and PCle 5.0, ensuring that AMD’s chips will be support cutting-edge components for the foreseeable future, while remaining competitive with Intel. There will not be backwards compatibility for DDR4.
We expect that the desktop chips will feature a Navi 2 integrated GPU. This should provide a welcome boost for those who want to game without a discrete GPU, although we expect most people will want to pair the Ryzen 7000 processors with a high-end graphic card.
