Google Pixel 5 is widely expected to launch later this year, after the company announces Android 11 and the mid-range Pixel 4a next month. The Pixel 5 will succeed last year’s Pixel 4, but it seems the company is going to be taking a different approach here.
While the Pixel 4 was a flagship smartphone powered by the Snapdragon 855 chipset, the Pixel 5 may not use a high-end Qualcomm processor. There were rumours since the beginning of the year suggesting that Google may withdraw from the ‘flagship’ market and will instead focus on the upper-midrange segment. Now, folks over at XDA-Developers offer more evidence that suggest the Google Pixel 5 will launch with Snapdragon 765 SoC instead of the high-end Snapdragon 865.
Going into the details, back in January three Pixel code-names, Sunfish, Bramble, and Redfin, surfed online. While the former is said to arrive with Snapdragon 730, the latter two were expected to ship with Snapdragon 765. While the ‘Sunfish’ codename was linked to the Pixel 4a, there was no definitive information regarding Bramble and Redfin. However, XDA-Developers could now find references linking the two codenames to Snapdragon 765.
An XDA Senior Member found that the the pre-installed EUICCGoogle APK was updated with references to upcoming Pixel devices. The “modem_model_mappings_json” string mentioned the “g7250” modem, which seems to be Google’s codename for Snapdragon 765 or 768G).
Additionally, David Ruddock of Android Police citing sources claimed the Pixel 5 will be powered by the Snapdragon 765 SoC. So, there seems to be a lot of evidence to support that the theory that the upcoming Pixel 5 will be a mid-range phone and not a flagship. It is unclear why Google is making such a move, but the most obvious one would be that the company is unable to compete against flagship phones from Samsung, OnePlus and Apple. ✅ GeekBite Amazon Kindle Basic and Kids 2022 with backlight (Latest)
