Battlefield 2042 introduced the Specialist system that allowed players to play a more flexible role as it decouples fixed roles to a wide array of characters.
However, this ‘novel’ system did not really hit the mark as players wanted a more familiar class system such as the one featured in Battlefield 3. That is what EA and DICE plan to do in the upcoming season. One of the main talking points of the Season 3 update is the decision to modify the game's divisive Specialists system in order to make it closer to something that the previous Battlefield titles had to offer.
The developers clarified this in a blog post that elaborated on the updates that will be introduced in Season 3.
“Earlier this year we put together a team to analyse the feedback received, and we’re now ready to talk about the future of Specialists and the class system,” said Dice producer Alexia Christofi. “The arrival of Specialists in Battlefield 2042 has been polarising. We have heard you. So, in Season 3 we’ll be moving Specialists into the classic and familiar Battlefield class system. They’ll have traits available to all Specialists within a given class, with existing open gadgets and throwables split between classes to fit their role. EA/DICE reckons that perception is going to change with the reveal of all ten of its specialists, which effectively puts "all the cards on the table". The first five specialists (each with a speciality and trait) broadly covered the traditional classifications of Assault, Medic, Support, and Recon, and there were flexible loadouts too – for further nuances. The new Specialists, doubling player choices to 10, are detailed in the video embedded below.
The dedicated Battlefield 2042 specialists page has been updated with all the new Specialists, so you can head on over there for a recap.
“Our initial thinking is this breakdown, but this is just the start of the discussion. We want to hear more from you. Specialists are not being removed from Battlefield 2042, but this evolution connecting them to the class system is one we know many of you have asked for.
“This is a significant change from us development-wise, which is why we are taking the time to get it right. And so, we’ll bring it during Season 3.” You can check the video detailing the updates below:
DICE also provided a glimpse into the latest in a series of reworks for the game's launch maps in the video. After releasing a revamped version of Kaleidoscope earlier this month, Renewal and Orbital will be updated as part of the next season in September and October, respectively.
